In Roman times it was called Puteoli and was considered one of the most important merchant ports of the Mediterranean, a place for commercial exchanges also with Egypt and the Orient.
On a small promontory overlooking the sea is the Rione Terra, the first urban settlement that was inhabited until the 1970s, when due to bradyseism all the inhabitants were forced to leave their homes.
After years of excavations that have brought to light the wonderful archaeological remains of the ancient city and its subsequent transformations, it is now possible to take the underground archaeological tour of Rione Terra.
You can walk through the streets of ancient Puteoli, among the old buildings and the little shops and experience an exciting journey through time.
Pozzuoli, in addition to Rione Terra and other archaeological sites, such as the Amphitheater and the Macellum or Temple of Serapis, is the city where the famous actress Sophia Loren lived in her youth, specifically at Via Solfatara n. 5 in front of the Flavian Amphitheater.
