The mussels of Miseno: a delicacy from Campi Flegrei.

The mussels that are cultivated in the sea in front of Capo Miseno lighthouse are among the most high quality and sought after products of the territory.

The origin of mussel cultivation in Bacoli area dates back to the time of the ancient Greek colony of Cuma and has continued for centuries to the present day.

Miseno mussels are special because they are grown in the seawater where no fresh water flows; moreover the marine volcanic fumaroles in the area contribute to give them a particular flavor.

From the promontory of Capo Miseno lighthouse in Bacoli, you can see the rows of buoys that support the ropes installed in the sea where Miseno mussels are cultivated.

If you want to taste Miseno mussels, I recommend going to Luigi and Salvatore, father and son. Their family has been mussel cultivators for generations and they still own a traditional mussels kiosk in Bacoli, at the beginning of the panoramic road that leads to the stunning viewpoint of Monte di Procida, where you can taste and buy this delicious food.

If you want, you can taste Miseno mussels prepared following local recipes also attending a fun cooking lesson or enjoying a traditional lunch at a local’s home.
