Mirabella Eclano Archaeological Park

In the municipality of Mirabella Eclano, in the province of Avellino, on a small plateau called Passo di Mirabella, there is the Archaeological Park with the remains of the ancient city of Aeclanum. The ancient Aeclanum, founded towards the end of the 3rd century BC and located between the valleys of the Calore and Ufita rivers, was one of the most important Samnite centers in Irpinia. The Samnites were a people made up of various tribes, including that of the Irpini who dominated the territory of the current municipality of Mirabella Eclano.

The Samnites were bitter enemies of the Romans and, after many battles, they were finally defeated and Aeclanum became a Roman city and remained so until the end of the empire. The remains of the Roman city are notable, including the public baths, the macellum which was the covered market square, houses and shops. A short distance from the Mirabella Eclano archaeological park we find the municipality of Taurasi, a pretty village with a medieval castle, famous throughout the world for its fine wines.
