Baia Sommersa - Underwhater Baia

Baia was the favorite place of Roman emperors and nobles to spend their holidays.

It was chosen as a holiday resort for the beauty of its landscape, the mild climate and the beneficial properties of the thermal waters that flowed from the volcanic subsoil.

Here was built an imperial palace, and Baia was also picked by the richest and most famous personalities of ancient Rome as the best place to build their luxurious villas.

In the 4th century AD. bradyseism caused a slow and inexorable sinking of the coasts, and the imperial palace, the villas and the thermal complexes that gladdened the life of the Roman aristocracy were submerged by the sea.
