LAKE MISENO

Lake Miseno is one of the four lakes of the Phlegraean Fields, the other three lakes being Lake Avernus, Lake Fusaro, and Lake Lucrino.

Lake Miseno is situated between Monte di Procida and Capo Miseno and is a natural wonder that offers a breathtaking scenery.

According to the myth of Virgil’s Aeneid, it owes its name to Misenus, the trumpeter of the Trojan army and friend of Aeneas, who drowned in the sea in front of the lake by the will of the god Triton.

Aeneas, upon finding his friend’s body, buried him under a huge mound of earth, thus creating the mountain now known as Capo Miseno, where he placed Misenus’s trumpet, weapons, and oar.

Lake Miseno is connected to the sea by two outlets and was used in antiquity by the Roman army as a place of shelter and for the preparation of ships; the lake was connected to the Miseno bay, which was the port used by the Romans as the base of their imperial fleet.

Today, Lake Miseno is surrounded by a pedestrian path, where one can stroll while enjoying the view of the city of Bacoli and the other enchanting natural beauties surrounding the lake.

At certain times of the year, sailing and canoeing events and competitions are held.

In particular, on September 20, 2024, the city of Bacoli will host the Canoe Polo Champions League, which will take place on Lake Miseno with 20 teams from across Europe.

Come visit Bacoli and the Phlegraean Fields, and you will have an unforgettable experience among archaeology, history, legends, scenic beauties, and a high-quality food and wine offer.
